Guest Post + Giveaways: Dawn Kirby, Author of Secrets

When I was offered the opportunity to join this blog tour, I immediately said yes. Why? Because I was fascinated with the concept of New Adult books. I had yet to have heard the term before this offer and didn't understand what a New Adult novel truly was. Thus, I joined the blog tour to spread the word. So, what is the New Adult genre? According to Annabell, tour organizer...

Where Young Adult is usually centered around characters between the ages of fourteen to seventeen, discussing 'firsts' (first boyfriend, first kiss, first sexual encounter, etc),  New Adult would give authors who write characters eighteen to twenty-six a place to fit their books and gain a fan base. Characters who are usually found in college type setting, deciding on a career and building a family. Characters who are transitioning from young adulthood to understand how to be a mature adult is where books in the New Adult genre fall under. The genre is also known as '20 somethings'. Which One to Choose?
Author Dawn Kirby discusses how she approached choosing a genre for her debut novel, Secrets (Serenity Series #1).
Sometimes it’s hard to place your novel in a specific genre. Sometimes its not. For SECRETS, I knew I had an adult book. I knew I had one that was entirely fictional. I knew it was contemporary.  I also knew there were elements of romance, though not as traditional as most. That said, deciding which genre to market it as was probably more difficult than trying to decided whether or not I was ready to kill off a character.
Oh yes, it can be that hard. With so many different “labels” to chose from a writer in the beginning stages of their career can be overwhelmed by them very quickly. I’m willing to bet, even some of the ones who have been around for years can get tripped up with them at one time or another.

As far as SECRETS went, since there isn’t a genre titled Contemporary Adult Paranormal Romance, I was left scratching my flipping back and forth between one or the other. There were times Urban Fiction popped up. Fantasy had a moment, but it was brief. There are no fairies or elves in my novel. No made up languages or dragons either.
Eventually I was left with the main components of the novel. Paranormal was a given. The vamps, weres and shifters had that one locked in. Romance wasn’t a stretch. Though the book focuses on more than just the relationship between Leah and Raine, it still plays a very important part. My final conclusion? I wrote a novel that could simply be described as a Paranormal Romance. My target demographic; adult.
 Luckily my publisher agreed.
 ~*~*~*~

It is said that the truth will set you free, but for Leah it kills.

Leah always knew she was different. From her extreme light sensitivity, to her ability to read people by their auric scent, she kept these differences secret.

Not even Mia, Leah's mother, knew the fullness of her daughter's differences, but she held even greater secrets to Leah's past - the truth about her father and Leah's conception.

With the escape of an old foe, Mia is too late to reveal to her daughter the thrush before Judith can exact her revenge in a wash of blood and death.

Thrown into a world unheard of, Leah discovers that she is not alone in keeping her secrets. That there are people from her parent's past who would die to protect her. If only she knew why.

Raine, placed as her protector, hides deadly secrets of his own. Drawn to each other, Leah and Raine must uncover the truth before one or both are killed.
