Defiance by C. J. Redwine is rich postapocalyptic YA fantasy perfect for fans of Graceling and Tamora Pierce.

While the other girls in the walled city-state of Baalboden learn to sew and dance, Rachel Adams learns to track and hunt. While they bend like reeds to the will of their male Protectors, she uses hers for sparring practice.

When Rachel's father fails to return from a courier mission and is declared dead, the city's brutal Commander assigns Rachel a new Protector: her father's apprentice, Logan—the boy she declared her love to and who turned her down two years before. Left with nothing but fierce belief in her father's survival, Rachel decides to escape and find him herself.

As Rachel and Logan battle their way through the Wasteland, stalked by a monster that can't be killed and an army of assassins out for blood, they discover romance, heartbreak, and a truth that will incite a war decades in the making.

Describe the Defiance trilogy in a tweet! 140 characters or less. No cheating or the Twitter Gods are going to get you.
"Headstrong girl + geek with a sword + brutal leader & conspiracy involving underground dragons = DEFIANCE."

What has been your favorite part of writing your series?
I loved bringing the characters through the awful things that happened to them and giving them a hopeful, happily ever after. I also loved hearing from readers who resonated with the grief and trauma my heroine experienced, and who felt hope that if she could come through it, so could they.

Writing a three-book series, what has your planning process looked like? Did you plot extensively and in advance?
My process started off looking like a loose plan (three very long synopses that ended up changing quite a bit as I wrote) and then wound up looking like late nights and binges on ice cream as I stared at my computer screen and wondered why I'd ever thought it would be a good idea to write a trilogy. :) It was a lot of rewriting and more rewriting until I finally got it right, but I'm very happy with the story.

You recently announced your next series, The Shadow Queen; can you give us any hints as to what we can expect?
The Shadow Queen is book 1 in the Ravenspire Chronicles, which are stand alone epic fantasy versions of fairy tales, each set in an adjoining kingdom. The Shadow Queen is my version of Snow White, which is essentially an epic showdown between two equally powerful females (Lorelai, the fugitive princess, and Irina, the evil queen) with a dragon shape shifter prince as the huntsman.
(Lili: oh my god I NEED this now!)

What is the most interesting thing you have Googled in the name of research?
Oh wow. I had to Google some really awful stuff for the Defiance series. I think the worst/most interesting was how to use white phosphorous as a weapon. I'm still surprised I didn't get a knock on my door from Homeland Security.

What is one series you would recommend to readers?
Just one? Aah! *flails* A recent favorite of mine is Jodi Meadows' THE ORPHAN QUEEN. It's a fantasy duology, and the sequel (THE MIRROR KING) comes out next spring.

Thor, Iron Man, or Captain America? GO!
Iron Man! I love brains, confidence, and a hint of bad boy.
