Intrigue abounds in this hotly anticipated sequel to The Kiss of Deception!

Held captive in the barbarian kingdom of Venda, Lia and Rafe have little chance of escape. Desperate to save her life, Lia's erstwhile assassin, Kaden, has told the Vendan Komizar that she has the gift, and the Komizar's interest in Lia is greater than anyone could have foreseen.

Meanwhile, nothing is straightforward: there's Rafe, who lied to Lia, but has sacrificed his freedom to protect her; Kaden, who meant to assassinate her but has now saved her life; and the Vendans, whom Lia always believed to be barbarians. Now that she lives amongst them, however, she realizes that may be far from the truth. Wrestling with her upbringing, her gift, and her sense of self, Lia must make powerful choices that will affect her country... and her own destiny.

Describe The Remnant Chronicles in a tweet! 140 characters or less. No cheating or the Twitter Gods are going to get you.
Oh you cruel TweetMaster. Here it is--in exactly 140 characters:

Princess refuses to marry unknown groom and bolts on wedding day. Prince and Assassin are in hot pursuit, but who is who? Deception abounds!

What has been your favorite part of writing The Remnant Chronicles? I can honestly say my favorite part, as a reader, was being totally surprised to realize the identities of the prince and the assassin in book one.
I loved writing the multiple viewpoints. It was fun to show how each character saw things from a slightly different viewpoint with their own limited information and the misunderstandings that could grow from that. I think that also gave the reader a chance to find empathy for each character--I hope!

With the release of book two coming ever close, can you tell us anything about it?
The Heart of Betrayal picks up right where The Kiss of Deception leaves off. Lia, Rafe, and Kaden cross the bridge into Venda and Lia discovers the kingdom of Venda is not quite what she expected. It is dangerous, complicated, and requires all of her energy and wit to stay alive--and keep Rafe alive too. Many want to see her dead, but there are a few who are fascinated with the enemy princess who is said to have the gift, and they might be the key to her survival. And then there's the Komizar who rules over it all . . . . He's not what she expected either.

What are you currently working on?
I am currently working on book 3, the final book of the series. Title yet to come!

What is the most interesting thing you have Googled in the name of research?
Well, some of my searches worry me a bit, because I have googled multiple ways to kill people including poison, and I have also googled different kinds of explosive materials. (I think all writers are on an FBI watch list ; ) But maybe the weirdest thing I have googled was the nutritional value of grubs. Yeah, those wiggly things on the forest floor. Ew. But hey, a girl's gotta eat, right?

What is one series you would recommend to readers?
One? Yes, this confirms it, you are a cruel taskmaster. I'll go with the last full series I finished which would be the His Fair Assassin series by Robin LaFevers. What is not to love about kick-ass nuns?

Thor, Iron Man, or Captain America? GO!
Thor is quite the hammer-wielding hunk, and Captain America sparkles when he smiles, but Iron Man has all kinds of sarcastic humor as he is saving the world. I'll take him.

Thanks for the fun questions, Lili!
Thank you so much for stopping by, Mary! I can't believe I got to interview you! <3

Macmillan is awesome enough to host a crazy awesome giveaway! Unfortunately, I have a small bit of bad news. Remember that flood I tweeted about a few weeks ago? A tiny bit of the prize pack was severely damaged because apparently some things are not safe on the top of your bookshelf. But most has survived! So enter for a chance to win a Fierce Reads tote and an ARC of Heart of Betrayal! Neither are damaged, I promise! I removed the damaged item because it is now illegible :(

All entrants must be 13 years or older and this giveaway is to the US only.

  1. OMFG I LOVE THIS SERIES. And her 140 character pitch is PERFECT! And I am anxious just thinking about book 3. I definitely guessed who was who wrong while reading The Kiss of Deception and I can't wait to reread - it'll be like a whole new experience. Thanks so much for the giveaway! I NEED THIS BOOK ON MY SHELVES!

    1. Book 3 needs to be in everyone's lives already and book 2 isn't even out yet.

  2. I am a huge fan of the first book and so excited for the next one. I also loved her description of the sequel. I love to hear anything about the next book. Thank you for sharing the interview and the great giveaway.

  3. Great post - I'm so excited for The Heart of Betrayal and this is just what I needed to help tide me over to release day, lol! I love the tweet, too. The Kiss of Deception was one of my favorites last year so I really have bad grabby hands right now.
    Thanks, Lili :)

    1. Grabby hands everywhere for this one. The entire world cannot wait for Mary E. Pearson's next release!

  4. Pearson's Google searches cracked me up. As an editor, I've thought this same thing - hopefully the police never investigate me because I've researched sabotaging trains and drugs, just within the past couple of months. I could look really dangerous! :-)

Thanks for the chance to win this book! I LOVED the first one!!
